Why is my speaker crackling? Causes and fixes

By the FxSpeaker team ยท Updated October 28, 2026

A crackling speaker is one of the most common audio complaints, and it appears on everything from phones and laptops to Bluetooth speakers. The noise can be a constant hiss, a pop when music starts, or harsh distortion at high volume. Luckily, the cause is usually simple. This guide explains the main reasons speakers crackle and shows how to identify which one you are dealing with.

First, work out when the crackle happens

The pattern of the noise tells you most of what you need to know:

Test with a wired connection or built-in speaker, and with several apps, before you assume the hardware has failed.

Cause 1: An unstable Bluetooth connection

Interference from Wi-Fi routers, microwaves and other devices, walls between the speaker and phone, or a weak battery can break up the wireless signal and produce crackles or dropouts. Move closer, remove obstacles, forget the speaker in your Bluetooth settings and pair it again. Keep the speaker charged, since low power often makes wireless audio less stable.

Cause 2: Volume and bass set too high

Pushing the volume and bass boost to maximum on both the phone and the speaker can overdrive the amplifier. Lower the volume on the audio source to about 80 percent, reduce the bass boost on the speaker, and check whether the crackle disappears. If it does, you were hearing distortion rather than a fault.

Cause 3: Equalizer, codec and app settings

Aggressive equalizer presets, loudness enhancers and spatial audio effects can add distortion. Reset sound effects to default and try another music app. If the noise only affects one app or video, the file itself may be poor quality.

Cause 4: Dust, lint and debris

Fine particles on the grille or around the diaphragm change how the cone moves and create a rough, scratchy sound. Brush the grille gently and run a short session with the FxSpeaker tool in Sweep mode. Our guide on cleaning dust and lint from a phone speaker shows safe methods.

Cause 5: Moisture in the speaker

Water on the diaphragm causes buzzing and crackling, especially after rain, sweat or a splash. Water-resistant ratings do not make the speaker immune, because the openings still let moisture in. Face the grille down and run Continuous mode at 165 Hz for 10 to 15 seconds, then follow what to do when water gets in your phone speaker.

Cause 6: Software or firmware glitches

Restart the phone and the speaker. For Bluetooth speakers, check the manufacturer's app for firmware updates, and use the reset procedure in the manual if crackling persists. Software issues are easy to fix, so try them before assuming damage.

Cause 7: Physical damage

A torn cone, loose internal wire or damaged connector produces constant crackle at any volume and in every app, often after a drop. Sound cleaning cannot repair this. If every earlier step fails, contact the manufacturer or a repair shop. Our overview of why a phone speaker sounds muffled covers more causes.

A quick fix checklist

How to prevent crackling in the future

Keep the speaker clean, charge Bluetooth speakers regularly and avoid running them at full volume and maximum bass for hours. Store devices in a dry place, keep firmware updated and pair only the devices you actually use, because several saved connections can cause the speaker to jump between sources. If you use your phone near water or at the gym, wipe the grille afterwards. A thirty-second maintenance session once a month with a soft brush and a short sound session costs nothing and prevents the slow build-up that causes most scratchy sound.

Frequently asked questions

Can crackling damage my speaker? Playing distorted sound loudly for long periods can stress the driver, so lower the volume until the problem is fixed.

Does the tool fix Bluetooth crackling? No, it helps only when dust or water on the grille is the cause. Connection problems need the Bluetooth steps above.

Why does my laptop speaker crackle? The reasons are similar, and our guide on laptop speakers that stop working after a spill explains them in detail.

Final thoughts

Match the symptom to the likely cause, change one thing at a time and you will usually find the cause within minutes. Everything in this guide and on the tool is free, as described on our pricing page.
